Commack Youth League

2007 Basketball Rules

The purpose of youth league sports is to have an environment where kids can have fun and treat each other with respect. Players will encourage their teammates, work on improving their skills as well as their understanding the game, and respect the officials and coaches.  Coaches will be positive role models and demonstrate character in dealing with players, officials, and other coaches.  All players will be on the court for at least one half of the game as the focus is on participation and fun over winning. SPORTSMANSHIP is expected from all players, coaches, and spectators at all times.  It is the discretion of the officials to determine whether an action is unsportsmanlike.  Taunting, profanity, and general disrespect for may also be dealt with additionally by the league.

Fifth and Sixth Grade

  • The game will be played in 18 minute halves with running time with a 28.5 basketball.  The clock will stop on a whistle during the last minute of the half and at the end of the game and starts when the official’s hand comes down after a player touches the ball.

  • Each team gets 2 timeouts per half, one 30 second and one full.

  • All teams will play man to man defense with no intentional doubling.  Players must be approximately six feet from the person they are defending. There will two double team warnings per team before a technical foul is called.

  • No team shall defend in the backcourt unless they are down by more than 10 points. When the defending team gets a rebound the offensive team must retreat and allow a “free up” in the backcourt.  The official may call possession (White or Red) reminding the appropriate team to retreat on defense, unless the deficit is 10 points.

  • No fast breaks are allowed unless a team is down by 10 points in the game.  If a team does break at an inappropriate time, the possession will go into the backcourt for the same team.  There is no penalty.

  • Substitutions will always after a whistle.  The player must report to the table and wait to be summoned by the official.

  • In case of a tie at the end of regulation there will be a three minute overtime period with the first two minutes running time and the last minute stopped time.  Each team will get one extra full timeout and the period will start with a jump ball.

  • Players with five fouls may stay on the floor but will receive a technical foul plus the result of the play if they foul at that point. The opposing team keeps possession as well.
