Girls Lacrosse Information
The Commack Youth League runs a lacrosse league for boys and girls 1st through 8th grade. The lacrosse program on long island is growing by leaps and bounds, and Commack has been building our program along the way. Lacrosse is a spring sport, and we encourage the youth of Commack to try the game. For most it is love at first game.

Lacrosse is lots of running with no contact, but a finesse game for the girls. Girls do wear eye protection, goggles, that will be loaned to 1st and 2nd graders only or first year players. The cost of goggles range from $35 and up. The girls have their own sticks, and are very different from boys sticks. Girls cannot use a boys stick, it will be considered illegal, and the referees will not allow them in the game. A girls stick also ranges in price points. We do suggest getting a decent starter stick. Very inexpensive sticks will make it very difficult for the girls to catch and throw and will discourage the girls. Port Jeff Sporting is our official uniform outfitter. They will be able to help pick out a stick.

Mandatory Equipment
  Girls Lacrosse Stick
  Girls Lacrosse Goggles
  Mouthpiece
Uniform (Parents will be required to purchase the girls uniform
consisting of shorts and jersey. The uniform can be  purchased
at Port Jeff Sports located on Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown.
If you have an old uniform, you do not have to purchase the new one.)
  Cleats are very much suggested

Depending on situation, girls in the Youth League may be required to take turns playing goal. The goalie equipment will be provided by the league, and consists of goalie helmet, chest protector, throat guard attached to helmet, goalie pants with pads and shin guards. The goalie also uses a special stick which will also be provided.

Girls Lacrosse Season
The girls lacrosse season usually starts with end of March practices/games, weather permitting. Most coaches practice 2 times a week at their discretion and choice of days. Games are usually played on Sundays. The younger teams may decide to play on Saturdays. Again, this is coaches choice, and we will not know for sure until late March. It is usually an 8 game season. There are no playoffs or standings. This is a developmental league. The teams are placed in competitive divisions (The Suffolk county girls league is growing extremely fast, and although we try, it does not always work out).

Coaching
We are always looking for new coaches.
Most moms and dads are afraid to step up feeling they do not know the game. We usually hold special coaches clinics. Any and all are welcome to attend free of charge. This is a learning league, and all the referees are there to help. Younger age groups, referees will stop the game and explain call to the girls as well as the coach. The referees will always answer questions. Our girls varsity coach is also going to help us out by running a separate coaches clinic, date and time to be announced. All returning and new coaches, thinking about coaching are welcome to attend.

Girls Lacrosse Rules
Girls lacrosse rules are always evolving. We will be posting the girls rules as soon as Suffolk County has amended or announced official rule changes.

About the Girls Game
Lacrosse is an extremely fast sport. There is lots of running involved. It is very much a combination of soccer and basketball. Again there is no physical contact like the boys. There is stick checking for the girls, but nothing like the boys game, and with limits. Modified stick checking starts in 7th grade. High School starts full stick checking. There is no stick checking for the younger girls, although this might be a rule change in the near future.
